Tanya Mallavarapu studio undertook the redesign and renovation of a few key spaces in this Chennai residence. The client’s strong sense of personal style gave the studio clarity and the space to experiment with color, patterns and materials. Each space is distinct, and the functionality has been translated using a vivid visual language.
The entertainment lounge reflects the client’s eclectic taste and her love for colors, fashion and modern art. An impactful wallpaper from Elitis framed by shelves with iconic art pieces is the focal point of this room. We used colour blocking, a play of prints from Missoni and sculptural furniture and lights. These elements are all individually maximal but come together cohesively to create a fun, vibrant space. The lounge leads into a terrace that we redesigned as an outdoor lounge and bar - we wanted to open up the entire floor for hosting.
The outdoor bar and backdrop was designed as a minimal piece that highlights the beautiful rippled marble with seamless joints. This is a stark form in stone against the lush Madras skies. We designed two powder rooms that are each individually striking and have stark moods. A statement gilded wallpaper from Cole and Sons is offset by a translucent green onyx with accent brass fixtures from Gessi in the first powder room. We laid classic chequered marble flooring in the second powder room with a soft textured paint in silver to set a balmy tone for the space. The Schonbek chandelier and the artwork stand out in this room as highlights.
The formal living room is a more subtle space with accents of color brought in through the upholstery. Some interesting accent pieces made of fine stonework and metal craft from Demuro Das have been used. An antique hand knotted silk carpet from the Carpet Cellar brings the space together. The artwork in this room is also framed in a unique style using antique mirror panelling. We wanted to create a guest bedroom that is inviting and cosy yet also memorable. A feature wallpaper from Papermint was used to created the background of this room. An interplay of classic detailing in the cabinetry and drapery with contemporary accessories from Jonathan Adlerbring this room together.
