Tanya Mallavarapu is Madras-based design practice founded in 2019, encompassing interior architecture and design with a unique focus on Indian art and craftsmanship.
We design meaningful spatial experiences and products: from furniture and lighting to residential and hospitality interiors. We work collaboratively with our clients to understand how they want to live and work to create carefully considered, functional and beautiful spaces that fit their lives while drawing from their vision, the site, surrounding landscape, local materials, culture and our design expertise.
At its heart, this multi-disciplinary practice conceptualises thoughtful spaces filled with well curated objects and clever details yet firmly rooted in practicality and purpose. Our value lies in a fully immersive approach to working with clients, contractors, technical experts, and vendors, building timeless spaces, selecting and sourcing high-quality materials, paying attention to finishes, and customising furniture and details that truly elevate the space.
I really love the process of personalizing a space for a client and being able to materialize their aspirations. As a result we are able to create distinctive spaces that bring together the best of functionality and design.
Tanya Mallavarapu was born in Bangalore and set up her Madras-based design practice in 2019. Formally educated in Business and Economics, her foray into interior design began when she worked with a team of architects building the Apollo Proton Cancer Centre in Chennai. The spaces, greenery, and art uplifted the patients and profoundly impacted their recovery. Struck with the realisation that spaces can transform how you feel, enhance your well-being and moods, and bring you comfort and joy, Tanya found her calling in crafting interiors that nurtured the human experience.
Following this, she enrolled in a Diploma of Interior Design from Parsons, New York. Tanya Mallavarapu creates timeless spaces that are an alchemy of volume, texture, light and colour. A strong proponent of Indian craftsmanship, she re-interprets them to have a contemporary design sensibility. Years of travel honed her eye as she explored museums, temples, churches, art shows, and even antique markets worldwide, resulting in a versatile sensibility in art, antiques, and craft, marrying the traditional and modern effortlessly.
